We are delighted to introduce our team with a series of interviews. We are asking very nosy questions so you can get to know us better. This week we asked a few questions to Innes Allan, Vanilla Square’s Founder and Managing Director.
Q.: Tell us a bit about yourself, Innes!
A.: I’m 53 years of age now and have worked within estate agency for the last 24 years or so. The years have flown by, suggesting that I’ve had fun. I live in Glasgow’s West End and as well as enjoying the lifestyle, the parks (dog walking) and pubs (still with the dogs) I like the work/leisure balance and the village feel to the area.
Although the Managing Director of Vanilla Square I’m still at the “coalface” every day. I enjoy this as it keeps you up to date and relevant but it is a challenge in terms of time management.
Q.: What is the first thing you do when you come in the office?
A.: The first task in the morning is essentially to look at the diary and see what the day offers. Thereafter it’s typically trying to get 3 hours of “office work” done in an hour and then be on schedule and effective at each appointment through the day, whether it’s for letting or sales.
I really enjoy delivering or over delivering for landlords and vendors whilst at the same time being seen as courteous and professional by tenants and purchasers. I also thrive on being referred to other parties and find that as fulfilling and rewarding as winning awards within the industry, which Vanilla Square have been fortunate to achieve on a number of occasions.
Q.: How do you keep work and personal life in balance?
A.: The balance between work and family time is highly challenging as we all seem to work longer hours and have more demands on our time. Long working hours including most weekends doesn’t scare or daunt me, in all honesty, I enjoy it (most of the time) and it just makes you appreciate time off and holidays more.
Q.: Talking about holidays, tell us of a special one that comes to mind!
A.: The best holiday I’ve been on is very difficult to pick, as I’m fortunate to have enjoyed a fair bit of travel both with family as well as boys’ golf trips. The most recent special trip was with my partner in South Africa. Cape Town is quite special and the weather, friendly locals, as well as outstanding food and wine, are hard to beat. To enjoy the likes of Table Mountain, Robben Island and Cape Town as well as a safari and then a winery at Stellenbosh or Franscheuk is quite something.
Q.: If you could do anything else for one day, what would it be?
A.: If I could do another job for one day, I think it would have to be as a top European golfer playing in Europe or the States. I’d have to be successful, though as it would only be fun if traveling on private jets!!
